CBT GRANT TO ENABLE EXTENSION OF

KIN’S WIRELESS HIGH-SPEED INTERNET NETWORK

KASLO  --  The Kaslo infoNet Society (KiN) has received a grant from Columbia Basin Trust that will allow the non-profit society to build the infrastructure necessary to introduce wireless high-speed internet service to Woodbury, Fletcher Creek, Mirror Lake, Shutty Bench, Schroeder Creek and Johnson’s Landing. The timeline will be announced later this spring.

“There is a large backlog of people and businesses who have been patiently waiting for high-speed internet service in these communities,” said Tyler Dobie, KiN Chairman. “We believe that high-speed internet will assist in the overall economic development of the North Kootenay Lake area and we have been working as fast as we can to raise funds to expand our network and to install customer premise equipment in areas we already serve. Volunteers are always most welcome,” he added.

The KiN high-speed network is currently operational in Meadow Creek, where their E-10 backbone is installed and their main 68' tower rises above the Lardeau Valley Community Hall. There are 17 subscribers to the high-speed wireless service to date, with more than 20 additional names on a waiting list for installations.

A repeater on a bluff above Cooper Creek will soon serve the communities of
Howser, Cooper Creek, and the unserved areas of Meadow Creek. Another tower in
Lardeau is planned to bounce the signal to the community of Argenta.

For more information or to sign up for service, call Operations Manager Rob McLennan at 353-1KiN.

Kaslo infoNet is a non-profit society founded in 1996 with a mandate to create a community access network in the Kaslo area. Successes to date include: Launching wireless high-speed internet service in Meadow Creek;  establishing free Community Access Program (CAP) sites at the Kaslo Library and J.V. Humphries School; creating summer employment for many students and youths to enable them to gain valuable experience in the high-growth information technology (IT) industry; launching www.Kaslo.org as a community portal for the Kaslo area; and providing web-hosting services to non-profit societies. Today KiN members are focused on bringing the benefits of high speed Internet to North Kootenay Lake communities in order to overcome the urban/rural digital divide. KiN memberships are just $5 annually.
